Rough with the Smooth

An apple a day brings

a sharp taste and some roughage

A wake up call for the mouth

A sphere to behold, to roll around gently in your hands

Perhaps in those moments of contemplation

you pause to shine your fruity prize

Before breaking the skin.

And then into the flesh

Who knows what knowledge will be revealed?

Perhaps you are expecting sweet and luscious

Maybe you are rewarded with

a mouthful of cool sweetness and  juice dripping

through your fingers near where you

pierced the skin.

Juicy and Sweet

Or maybe  it is suddenly

Tart and  crisply challenging

You wince like a toddler tasting lemons for the first time

And you hang in there for the follow up

Hit of surprising sweetness and clarity
